Seit dem mysteriösen Verschwinden des gefeierten Malers Blackwood im 19. Jahrhundert steht sein Anwesen in Rhode Island leer, doch angesichts größerer Geldschwierigkeiten wird es nun verkauft - an den Architekten Alex Farnham, der es gemeinsam mit seiner neuen Freundin Kim, einer Inneneinrichterin, wieder in seinen alten und architektonisch reizvollen Urzustand zurückversetzen will, um damit später beim Verkauf einen ordentlichen Schnitt zu machen. Dabei hat Alex seine Tochter Sally aus erster Ehe wieder bei sich, die von ihrer Mutter wegen anhaltender Depressionen aufgrund der Scheidung praktisch zwangsverschickt wurde und über die Nähe zu ihrem Vater, den sie für die Scheidung verantwortlich macht, auch nicht erfreut ist. Allerdings reizt das weitläufige Anwesen die Phantasie des Mädchens an, bis Alex entdeckt, daß es ein zusätzliches Untergeschoß im Haus gibt, das bisher versiegelt war.
